Doki Wong.
I started this artwork based on an inquiry that guided me into researching the impact of human life on the ecosystem. Unfortunately, we do a lot but, fortunately, we do a lot. I questioned if the ecosystem would hold up without us present and constantly interfering. The answer was that the environmental equilibrium would be thrown off and take some time to get put back together, but in the end, it would balance out. This piece shows the result of the possibility where humanity retreated in areas, leaving it almost perfectly untouched as the greenery takes it over once more.
I wanted to illustrate the future of plant life and global warming coming to a halt altogether. Realistically, we could have this if we started investigating better materials suited for the Earth that would not cause harm to our environment. People enjoy pretty artwork, and that is what typically gets photographed by your everyday civilian who is taking a stroll through town. I wanted to give my artwork that ethereal feel while still attempting to portray my theme.
The vegetation climbing up the walls of the buildings leads to a triumph in mother nature over human nature - something man made over Earth’s ingredients. As shown in the sketch, there’s a handprint placed on the trunk of the tree to the left, overgrown with vines, symbolizing human interference in the past. The overarching sun represents the sunnier side of things better known as the happier side of life itself. Nature begins to thrive without human intervention, but as you look further left to where the human handprint is, the sky darkens. This symbolizes how humans may ultimately be the downfall of Earth’s nature and ecosystem.
Overall, this encompasses the nature vs. man theme by incorporating the naturistic feel of the Earth and eliminating the chance of man’s survival in the end. Life has always been about survival of the fittest, and I wished to challenge that. One cannot survive without the other, but a simple what-if question leads the human mind into the foundation for my art.
